Eating healthy is no easy feat but small steps can add up to major lifestyle changes. Take the fridge for example. A little overhaul on how we store our food can contribute to our goal of a healthier diet.
Throw out what you don’t need
If you’re serious about your diet plan, the first thing you should be doing to your fridge and pantry would be to throw out everything in there that you don’t need to help you in your journey. Include in the pile cans of soda, juice, and salad dressings that’s commercially prepared.
Don’t hide the healthy stuff
Where do you usually find the fruits and vegetables in a fridge or pantry? Usually, they’re hidden away in the crisper drawer but that’s a mistake if you want to live a healthier life. You should take care to put the healthy stuff right in your eye line the moment you open the pantry door or fridge. And since most fruits and vegetables are the first to spoil, you won’t forget about them each time you’re looking for a healthy snack.
Rinse and cut
The moment you get home from buying groceries, rinse the ones that are already bite-sized and pat them dry before arranging them in bowls. The bigger fruits you should rinse and cut them into smaller pieces and store them in lidded containers. Stack them in front of the fridge so the color will easily catch your eye.
Scrub and bag
Next, for your vegetables, you should clean and trim them before storing them in easy-to-go bags. Store them in an easily accessible part of the fridge for easy pick up for pre-dinner snacks or packed lunches. You can also prep your fresh veggies, washing, cutting, and putting them in containers for the entire week so you don’t have to think about preparing your meals every day.
Top shelf always
Forego your cheese drawer, aim instead for the top shelf where you should be storing the all too popular superfood, plain and unsweetened Greek yogurt. Choose one that’s low-fat instead of cream. If you can’t give up your cheese, go for part-skim mozzarella sticks to munch on.
When it comes to meat, lean is the way to go. It’s time you say goodbye to bacon, salami, sausages and start storing lean protein like salmon, chicken, eggs, and tofu. A helpful tip would be to grill your chicken at the start of the week so they can be used on salads.
The last thing you want to think about when you get home has to wait for brown rice to cook especially when you’ve had a long day at work. But cooked rice surprisingly holds quite well when stored in the fridge. Put it in a small pot or a container with a tight lid and add a splash of water before you microwave it. You can cook a pot of brown rice on weekends and chill them in the fridge for the rest of the week.
Mind your condiments
It’s a common sight to see a lot of condiments filling up the fridge or pantry door. But now is the time to get serious about the expiration dates of some of those sticky bottles. Throw away the ketchup, ranch, and mayo because these are the worst offenders when it comes to unhealthy food, not to mention they’re packed with sugar and sodium. You should replace them with fun and flavorful salsa, pesto, and hummus.
Stop with the soda
The reason why so many Americans are ballooning is due to the number of sugary drinks they consume on a daily basis. Some barely drink water as it, prefers to grab a Coke or Pepsi can instead. If you’re serious about your jump to health and wellness, better ditch the soda, diet soda, and juice and switch exclusively to water. But if the water is a little too bland for you, try sparkling water or you can also try infusing your water with fresh fruits and herbs.
